First Look of Kaum De Heere is out now!

Just a week ago, we wrote an article on how another 1984 Punjabi film (After Sadda Haq last year) was not given a certificate by CBFC, and now the makers have launched the official trailer of the said film, Kaum De Heere.

Kaum De Heere is made on a very sensitive subject of Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination.

Kaum De Heere stars Raj Kakra, Sukhdeep Sukh, Sardar Sohi, Sukhvir Ji, Esha Sharma, Renu Mohali, Rah Dhaliwal, Sonu Kelon, Lukhwinder Singh and others. It is directed by Ravinder Ravi.

Kaum De Heere was supposed to release on February 28, 2014 but it is a wait and watch situation.

Movie Review: Ishq Brandy

Review by +Bikram Bathh
Cine Punjab Reviews
February 22, 2014

Punjabi Cinema hasn't seen a single clean hit in the last 6 months and everyone has more than one reason for Ishq Brandy to finish that lean period. It's got the production values, a hit director, good starcast and music. I remember the launch of the film last year where it was said to be based on adventure sports and have some never seen before water sports activities. Now, that is exciting!

But if I have to sum-up the film is one line, it'll be... Ishq Brandy, the film isn't the perfect cocktail but it does taste well if you leave your brains home.

Synopsis: Ishq Brandy is a masala potboiler which narrates a story of three friends who have a tag line "if you are my friend, I don't need an enemy"... Teji, Gura and Pritam from three different worlds, bound by their respective Ishq, do something under the spell of Brandy that they unknowingly put their Ishq(s) at stake and what follow are rib-tickling sequences which decide their fate .
("Masala Potboiler" Huh? Trying to give it a different name doesn't make it anything more that a comedy)

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues: Ishq Brandy's solo writer Rupinder Inderjit seems to have taken inspiration from various Bollywood/Hollywood movies (has almost become a must in Punjabi Films, Sigh!). Adding south indian characters is fun but a backstory picturization would have been funnier. Also integrating social media site Facebook is a very novel idea, I am not saying it is the first film to use it but it definitely is the first Punjabi film to have actually used it into the narrative flawlessly. Somehow the film after a good build up looses the track in second half and a prolonged climax makes it hard to watch and ends up giving it an anti-climax. Dialogues could have been better too. Overall, Decent!

Acting: Roshan Prince has been on a roll finally. He has got the talent but lacks the right nurturing that is needed to be the next big thing. His comic timing has improved a lot. Alfaaz really needs to work on his physique and also on his expressions. He has definitely improved since his last film, the dud "Jatt Airways". Binnu Dhillon is back after a hiatus (his last release was Naughty Jatts that released 6 months ago). As always, his acting is good and many people may be surprised looking at his shirt-less avatar (Next male lead in the making, maybe?). As said above, Dialogues could have been better and you feel that even more when you hear and see Binnu Dhillon giving you a feeling of deja-vu with his dialogues. Amongst the girls, Wamiqa Gabbi is the show-stealer, she is in terrific form after her debut last year and following it up with a Bollywood film, hope to see her more on screen. Japji Khaira is loveable but could have been used a bit more. Newcomer Shobita Rana is okay but she hardly has a role. In terms of supporting roles, B N Sharma has an interesting character, Karamjit Anmol is good too. Shivendra Mahal and Avtar Gill are wasted. Overall, Good!

Music: Music of the film is good as expected but isn't promoted so well. Tracks like Gypsy, Chakma Jatt, Hajj and Kaash standout. Makers tried to sell the music as a Yo Yo Honey Singh film but he has just one song and majority of the music is composed by Sachh with an additional remix song by Desi Routz. Overall, Very Good!

Direction and Technical Aspects: Director Amit Prasher made a successful debut with Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 last year which was a very well made film and follows up with a somewhat good film. I feel he should have opted for a better star cast and also included some more shots of Mauritius. I mean.. come on, you have got the perfect location but end up shooting indoor resorts and hotels. Go out there and shoot some picturistic locations. Coming to the technicalities, Ishq Brandy has good production values, but it has continuity and camera jerks, bad quality video at more than one occasion. Choreography is good, especially Daddy Da Jamai and Kaash. Overall, Good!

Ishq Brandy is in the league of "leave your brain home" films. Despite a loose second half and an anti-climax, it is enjoyable majorly due to its stars Roshan Prince, Binnu Dhillon and Wamiqa Gabbi. One-time watch at least!

Manmohan Singh, Jimmy Sheirgill, Neeru Bajwa return with Munde UK De 2

Starcast of Munde UK De 2

February 26, 2014
Cine Punjab News Network

After the announcement of Babbu Mann's Baaz yesterday, here's another good news for Punjabi Cinema. Legendary director Manmohan Singh returns with Jimmy Sheirgill for the sequel to their superhit film Munde UK De (2009). They both are coming together after 5 years although Manji (short for Manmohan Singh) introduced Jimmy Sheirgill with his 2005 film Yaaran Naal Baharan.

The shooting of Munde UK De 2 is starting today and it will release later this year or early next year. From the original starcast of Munde UK De, Neeru Bajwa and Gurpreet Ghuggi are returning whereas Binnu Dhillon is the latest addition in the starcast.

Picture posted by Neeru Bajwa along with the confirmation of the film
Both returning together after major professional failures
Although Munde UK De 2 will be seen as one of the most awaited Punjabi films but both Manji and Jimmy Sheirgill's recent failures cannot be ignored. Manji after giving several hits with Harbhajan Mann and Jimmy Sheirgill went on to make Ik Kudi Punjab Di (2010) and Ajj De Ranjhe (2012), both of which didn't do well with former still managing to be a semi-hit. Similarly, Jimmy Sheirgill's last release Rangeelay was an average fare too.

Second Manmohan Singh-Jimmy Sheirgill film to have a sequel
Punjabi Cinema hasn't seen too many sequels so far but whatever they have so far seems to be showing a liking towards Manmohan Singh-Jimmy Sheirgill films. Their Yaaran Naal Baharan saw a sequel too, although the film bombed a couple years back (it didn't have anyone from the original team except the producers). Here's hoping Munde UK De 2 sees worldwide success like Jatt and Juliet 2.

Is Harbhajan Mann-Manmohan Singh film next?
Now, the next big question is... whether Manmohan Singh will also turn back to his former protégé Harbhajan Mann. Both of them together have given some of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Punjabi Cinema. The word out there is that, they will be working together very soon and if this happens, Manmohan Singh, Jimmy Sheirgill and Harbhajan Mann will be back in full form (fingers crossed!).

First Look of Jatt James Bond is out now!

After starring in some of the biggest blockbusters of Punjabi Cinema, Desi Rockstar Gippy Grewal has created a huge fan-following over the last 2 years and now he is back to surprise and shock them with Jatt James Bond.

Jatt James Bond is a "heist" film and will explore unheard/unseen dimensions in Punjabi Cinema. With elements of romance, strong drama, subtle comedy and amazing action, this film will definitely take a thunderous opening when it releases on April 25, 2014.

Jatt James Bond also marks the debut of Zarine Khan who was seen with Salman Khan in 2010 release Veer and Yashpal Sharma (critically acclaimed Bollywood character artist). Punjabi Cinema through the 1920's - "A Punjab Village" and more... (Cine Punjab Diaries)

A Punjab Village...
In 1925, British Film Institute made a documentary called A Punjab Village, It was screened through out India. Later, the same British company covered some historical events of Punjab. Around the same time Patiala Royals were mesmerized by the idea of filming big events of their lives, and screened their larger than life moments at several occasions. The very first Theatre and CinemaScope in Lahore screened mostly English feature films, but at times screened short films and documentaries of rural India's Festivals, Events, Fairs, Dance Forms, Birds, Khushti (wrestling), Kabbaddi, Trains, Labours and Farmer scenes.
All these events served as the foundation for Punjabi Cinema.

A Punjab Village - First ever documentary on Punjab preserved by the BFI

Amrita Pritam and her ancestral connection to early Punjabi Cinema
Noted Punjabi writer and poet Late Amrita Pritam needs no introduction but her ancestral connection to Punjabi Cinema is something that has not been given its complete due. In the Late 20s, her father Late Kartar Singh Hitkari, a school teacher, poet and a Sikh preacher organized a Sikh History Pictorial through a Projector in his school and followed it up at many writer's meets. In a short span of time, people because of a positive word of mouth and sheer excitement wanted to see this Pictorial.

Late Amrita Pritam's father's early contribution
is often ignored in the history books
Censor Board - A religious/social censor board
Once Late Kartar Singh Hitkari organized a similar show in a Guruduara where just before he was about to start the projector, many Nihang Singh's gathered and objected on the show. They said - any form of cinema should not be allowed in the Holy Place. Late Kartar Singh Hitkari, who was planning to add more video clips of religious places, was so upset and decided never to do any pictorial show after that incident.

Yes, K.D. Mehra may be called the Father Of Punjabi Cinema, but....
We often read at online forums and also articles about arrival of Punjabi Cinema where K.D Mehra is one name widely mentioned. He can be rightly called the Father of Punjabi Cinema as he made the first Punjabi Film Sheila (aka Pind Di Kudi) in 1935 but it was the very first attempt to make a punjabi talkie  but not the first film in Punjabi Cinema. As Alam Ara (1931) was the first Indian Talkie film and before that silent films were made, there has also been over two dozen films representing Punjab. There were many silent films based on Sohni Mehiwal, Puran Bhagat, Mirza Sahiba etc representing the traditional stories and at the same time films like Punjab Mail, Punjab Kesri spoke about modern day period.

First Female director of India Fatima Begum and her contribution to Punjabi Cinema
Fatima Begum - a famous film star and first female director of Indian Cinema made a silent film on the famous love tale of Punjab Heer Ranjha.

Fatima Begum - India's First Female Director
Movie Clashes existed even in the 1920's and 30's
There were times when two different film companies made films on same subject, for instance, there were at least three films on Heer Ranjha released within a few months gap. They were made by Lahore, Bombay and Calcutta based companies. Often to avoid clashes and comparisons, titles of films were changed like Hoore-E-Punjab, Heer of Punjab etc.

Iconic kiss from Hoore-E-Punjab
Punjab and its influence on Indian Cinema
Punjab, her heroes and stories were always part of the mainstream Indian cinema and continues till date. As we all know, the first Indian talkie released in 1931 and it took Punjab just four years for a Punjabi talkie film to arrive on the scene. However, there was never a dearth of films about Punjab and its popular tales even if the actual language was not in Punjabi.

Cine Punjab Diaries is a series of articles, videos and photos that will take you down the history of Punjabi Cinema right from the 1920's to the present. It is written by Film buff/historian Gurwinder Lotay with insights from Bikram Singh Bathh.
