Punjabi audiences prefer comedy: RSVP producer

New Delhi, (IANS)
October 9, 2013

Brinder Sran, who is ready to make her debut as a producer with "RSVP - Ronde Saare Vyah Picho", says the majority of Punjabi audiences prefer comedy and they have yet to evolve to appreciate other serious subjects.

Co-produced by Aparna Sud, "RSVP" is based on how non-resident Indians (NRIs) and people from other states marry Punjabi people. The makers of the film, which will release Friday, have tried to bring in various elements to make the story appealing to the audience.

"It's a serious subject. NRIs or people from other states lure people into wedding. Then what happens after the ceremony, no one knows. We've tried to present it in a good way by putting various elements like romance, comedy, drama and action so that the audience doesn't get bored," Sran told IANS.

"The Punjabi audience right now... more than half of them like comedy. A small percentage of the audience likes to watch films with good subjects. We don't have a very mature audience as of now," she added.

As "RSVP" is a complete family entertainer, the 29-year-old is expecting good response from non-Punjabi moviegoers too.

"I have faith in audience that they will watch my movie. I am already getting good reviews from Mumbai. We have Maharashtrian team members too. They've watched the film and liked it," said Sran, who co-produce it under her husband Himmat Singh's banner Himmat Ventures.

She is looking forward to wider acceptance for the film.

"According to my knowledge, Punjabi movies do well in Delhi. I have friends who are not from Punjab and I was amazed to see them appreciate movies like ‘Jatt and Juliet' and other movies from the region. It's nice to see non-Punjabi people watching movies and trying to understand our language," she said.

Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the movie features Harish Verma, Neeru Bajwa, Gugu Gill, Rajpal Yadav, amongst others.

"We are happy that we have Neeru, who is the queen of Punjabi cinema. We knew that no one else could play the role better than her. We wanted a typical Punjabi girl look, which Neeru has and she is extremely talented and experienced," said Sran.

"RSVP" could be a trendsetter as it stars pure actors.

"We are glad that we have worked with only actors and not Punjabi singers-turned-actors, a trend in Punjabi cinema. After watching the film, people will know that Punjabi actors have talent and they should get more work," she added.

Punjab Politicians in Punjabi Cinema

The new generation Punjabi cinema has not only set the box office ringing, but has also generated interest in unexpected quarters: among the Politicians and Realtors.

Impressed by the success of contemporary Punjabi movies like "Jatt and Juliet" and "Carry on Jatta", netas and their kin are flocking to grab a slice of the showbiz action.

With a sharp rise in number of films being produced over the last few years, and some proving to be grossers, many from the political class, irrespective of which party they belong to, are putting their money and time into film-making.

Recently released Punjabi movie "Young Malang" was produced by the senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal's son Rahulinder Sidhu, Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka is also tested waters by co-producing "Dil Pardesi Ho Gia", featuring Bollywood's Akshay Kumar and Shakti Kapoor and Punjabi singer Inderjeet Nikku .

Senior Akali leader and Markfed chairman Jarnail Singh Wahid, co-owner of a sugar mill in Phagwara, has also jumped into film production by setting up Wahid Sandhar Show Biz, along with his family and business partner Sukhbir Sandhar. The production house came out with a film by the intriguing title of "Vyah 70 Km" and soon to be released "Mukhtiar Chadha". Sandhar had earlier produced "Jatt Boys Putt Jattan de", and its success prompted Wahid to collaborate for "Viaah 70 Km".

The trend was started by PTC Motion Pictures, a sister concern of PTC Channel, which is controlled by the first political family of Punjab. The group had produced "Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad" a few months ago.

According to industry insiders, this film acted as a trigger for other Punjab leaders to try their moves in the cine world as they trust the business knack of the family.

Jarnail Wahid said it was his son Sandeep Singh's idea to venture into this trade. The latter explained the shift as a business opportunity since Punjabi films are doing well these days. "But it appears there is a rush as many people are joining showbiz. It can lead to compromise in quality and cast."

With the slowing down of the property scene, realtors too are finding it a lucrative investment. They have begun financing movies, including those being produced by the kin of established politicians. "Earlier, investing in property made good business sense, but with the slump in the market many people, including netas, are looking for new investment options," said someone associated with the Punjabi film industry.

According to Punjabi music and film critic Swaran Tehna, it's also the glamour that is a draw for political families, especially when they can afford to pander to their whims. "It gives them the chance to see their names on the big screen and provides them good exposure during promotions," he said.

Movie Review - RSVP Ronde Saare Vyah Picho

Review by +Bikram Bathh
Cine Punjab Reviews
Oct 12, 2013

Films like Mel Karade Rabba, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya, Jatt and Juliet 1 and 2 have three things in common. They were good romantic comedies, could be watched with families and they were all blockbusters. Now after a hiatus, this Friday sees the release of film RSVP - Ronde Saare Vyah Picho that can be watched with families and is a great romantic comedy. The third common element has to be fulfilled by YOU, the audience by watching the film in theatres and making it a success. Frankly, some pre-release reports suggested the film to be looser in terms of content but I am pleasantly surprised that the film is very well made,  has a different though borrowed storyline, superior performances, soulful music and excellent technicalities.

Synopsis: Once upon a time in good old Sadda Punjab, lived a carefree and cheerful girl named Manpreet.
Like any lively Punjabi girl, her big fat wedding day had finally arrived with teeming pomp and fanfare. Jasraj Brar was his name. He was your characteristic, cock-and-bull story Punjab Da Prince Charming; Flamboyant, Hoodlum, Brawny and Affluent. Everything in life seemed completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Meanwhile, the effervescent Manpreet is not so sure about him. Unmistakably, he’s not ‘The One’. All hope seems lost. Until.. Manpreet’s only glimmer of hope rises in the avatar of a long-lost heart. A man who is helplessly and hopelessly in love with her.

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues: RSVP is a story of Manpreet aka Mannu, who is brought up by his maternal uncle Gurjit and aunt Rajjo. The family is completed by the only son Hira. They are basically a con family where Mannu leads the pack by making a love nest around guys who want to marry her. She marries them and then flees with all their material wealth. The film is said to be inspired from real incidents and has been very intelligently adapted by writers Ved Prakash and Vijay Kumar Arora. The film starts with a bang where there isn't a single dull moment until the post-interval portion. Infact, with the flackback and the back story running on screen, the audience was in splits of laughter. However, the story takes a downer soon after the interval where it tends to get a bit dramatic. This is where the film falters, it stretches and gets a bit boring at times. Writers could have added some more chemistry between the lead pair making it convincing that they indeed will fall in love with each other. Some of the content in the film is borrowed from Bollywood films like DDLJ (post-interval) and Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl but that could be a co-incident. Dialogues are apt and as usual the best ones are minted by Jaswinder Bhalla. Overall, Good

Acting: RSVP belongs to Neeru Bajwa and this is her second film in a row where her name appears before the male lead. She is flawless in the role of Mannu, she looks stunning as well as seductive in the role of the bride and con artist. Harish Verma is somewhere downplayed in the film but he comes with a mature performance like always. However, with another film revolving around marriages (read Viyah 70KM), Harish Verma's act looked like a repetition and he should try to choose films wisely. Jaswinder Bhalla is top notch as usual, Navneet Nishaan is first rate. Pukhraj Bhalla, reel and real life son of Jaswinder Bhalla is decent, he did a better job in his debut film Stupid 7, however like his father, his comic timing is apt, all he needs to do is work on his emotional and dramatic scenes. Rajpal Yadav is efficient but under utilized, same goes for Rana Ranbir. Jaswant Dhaman as Daddi is perfect. Guggu Gill is repetitive but enjoyable. Overall, Excellent

Music: Like several other releases in the last few months, RSVP has multiple music composers but this time around they are able to deliver a chart-buster in Aibo. Infact calling "Aibo", the song of the year won't be an understatement. It is beautifully composed by Gurmeet Singh and makes you want to get off your seat and dance. Another song by the same composer "Tu Vi Ni" and sung by Navraj Hans is soulful. Channa Ve composed by Daljeet Singh and sung by Sandeep Bankeshwar is another melodious number. DJ Wale Veera, Kudi On Fire and RSVP Title Track are all right. Overall, Good!

Direction and Technical Aspects: One can ascertain the cinematic experience of the debut director Vijay Kumar Arora through the various merits of the film. Amritsar has never looked so beautiful on screen, kudos to the cinematographer Rakesh Rawat. Special mention of the art director Zulfiquar Qureshi and Choreography. Two young producers also deserve a mention - Aparna Sud, Brinder Sran for making such a wonderful film. The only jitters technically in the film were some minor continuity errors and not so crisp editing. Overall, Good!

RSVP - Ronde Saare Vyah Picho boosts of an entertainment value that we don't see nowadays in the countless Punjabi comedy films. RSVP has a story and substance, along with wonderful performances, soulful music and everything that any A grade Bollywood movie has. Watch it with your families and loved ones and celebrate Punjabi Cinema. Recommended!

Movie Review - Ishq Garaari

$
0
0
Review by +Bikram Bathh
Cine Punjab Reviews
Oct 26, 2013

First things first, Ishq Garaari comes at a time when it faces three major challenges -
1.) Too many below average Punjabi movies have released in the recent past hence keeping the public somewhat away from theatres.
2.) Media and select audience's outrage against comedies in Punjabi Cinema.
3.) Pre-Diwali period, that is usually a lull because of the countless other entertainment and shopping experiences that keep the general public busy.

Keeping all of the above aside, the question is... does Ishq Garaari work? Yes for some, and "are you kidding me" for the rest. Ishq Garaari is a film that falls into the category of either you like it or you hate it. Like most, I found it to be a decent entertainer which may find its audience in the fans of Sharry Mann, college going students who like to watch movies and most importantly the die-hard Punjabi Cinema lovers who don't miss out even a single movie.

Synopsis: Sharry is a village lad who is poet at heart. His poetry is earthy and he sees love in the most conventional way. But his tragedy is that no one understands his writing and considers him a sellable poet and singer. For this reason whichever music company he has approached has rejected him along with his own family and so Sharry had started living with his friend Boondi outside the village in a small shed. The girl he loves never understands a word of his poetry and wants Sharry to join her father’s tempo business and marry her. Sharry also gets caught up in money matters as Makhan Singh (Chacha Raunaki Ram) demands 70 lacs if Sharry refuses to join his business.

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues: Dheeraj Rattan, the writer, (having written several blockbuster movies of Punjabi Cinema) needs no introduction, but shockingly here he has come up with a story that has absolutely no substance. The plot is completely a no-brainer making it really difficult for the story to be relatable to the viewer. Spoiler Alert - I can't come to terms with an auto rickshaw (Tempu) business owner having 70 lacs in his house for 3-4 days without even checking it once. Infact, I'd call it a missed opportunity where in if he had avoided such a blunder, a brilliant ensemble film could have been made today. Since the foundation (Story) is so weak, the pillars are not usually strong and this is where I was surprised. Despite not having a solid story, the screenplay was knitted well by Dheeraj Rattan. Dialogues by Jass Grewal, Mukesh Vohra and Jatainder Singh deserve a mention here. Overall, Average

Acting: Ishq Garaari should be regarded as Sharry Mann's debut film for the sheer interest that he has taken in his character, which I though was basically a screen adaption of his own-self. He is charming as an aspiring singer and writer who has a very unique connect with his audience which only Babbu Mann has had in the recent past. Whenever Sharry Mann was on screen, the audience in the theatre was whistling, hooting, screaming and what not! Mandy Takhar has really grown as an actor in Ishq Garaari, she has always looked beautiful but with her found expressions, she can also act well now. Miss Pooja is competent and has given her best performance till date. Rannvijay and Gulzar Chahal are okay but this film may not take their career anywhere. Vinaypal Buttar is as amazing as he was in his recently released debut film Young Malang, this guy certainly has a future in Punjabi Cinema. Gunjan Walia looks beautiful and that's about it. Prabhleen Sandhu is okay. Balwinder Bicky (Chacha Raunky Ram) is such a talent and it's always great to see him. Mukesh Vohra is the scene stealer with his epic comic timing and expressions. A special appearance by a leading singer deserves an applaud, I just can't wait to see him in a full fledged role. Overall, Very Good.

Music: Sharry Mann is a singer who is blessed with a wonderful voice and he does justice to all the three songs that he has sung and written in the film - Koi Ishq, Meri Zindagi, Kudiye Chidiye. Yo Yo Honey Singh's Khalaara and RDB's Jack Jatt Da are good too. Overall, the album has a got mix of romantic, sad, bhangra, party and comic numbers. Very Good

Direction and Technical Aspects: Dheeraj Rattan, the director returns back after the debacle of Saadi Love Story and has proved that he can direct well. As written above, Ishq Garaari has a very thin plot and making that plot into a decent entertainer needs a lot of thinking and work. Songs are shot very well and production values are top notch. I would particularly like to mention the costumes designer. On the flipside, the editing and cinematography could have been way better. Overall, Good

Ishq Garaari is a decent entertainer that rests on the shoulders of Sharry Mann despite boosting of an ensemble cast. Watch it for him, the songs and overall feel of an ensemble cast in Punjabi Cinema.
