From being the captain of his school’s hockey team to the leader of the bhangra team in college and finding fame as a singer, Sarabjit Cheema has excelled in everything he’s tried his hands at. Although his debut film Pind Di Kudi (2004) didn’t garner much acclaim at the box office, Cheema is now back on screen to woo audiences.

In Punjab these days  along with Anisha Pooja, his co-star in his upcoming film Punjab Bolda, Cheema talked about the film’s historical relevance. “The movie will throw light on the history of Punjab, along with its present situation.

The state’s youngsters are enamored with the west and this has affected the quality of their language and their love for Punjab’s heritage and culture. However, if the youth get united, they can fight for a change for the better,” says Cheema, while insisting that students, especially, should watch the film that releases August 15.

Having roped in famous Pakistani singer Arif Lohar to sing one of the songs, Cheema adds that he believes in giving Pakistani artistes a chance to work in India to promote love and warmth between the two nations. “This is really important and in my future projects too, I would try to make such efforts,” says he, adding that every film should carry a message for the society.

Starring along with Cheema in Punjab Bolda is Anisha Pooja, Miss India Universe 2008, who would be making a debut as an actor with the film. Born in Switzerland, Anisha says she always loved the Punjabi language.

To prepare herself for the journey in the world of entertainment, Anisha enrolled herself at the illustrious Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Los Angeles, US, and European Film Actor School in Zurich. “Even when I was a student, I was always associated with theatre and short films. I believe that theatre teaches you real acting,” she says. In Punjab Bolda, Anisha will portray the role of a high-spirited journalist who helps youngsters fight injustice.

Movie Review - Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De

        Review by +Bikram Bathh
        Cine Punjab Reviews
        August 23, 2013

First things first, Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De doesn't degrade the Punjabi movies as a few intellectual Punjabi Cinema fans have been complaining, neither does it bring down the Punjabi film standards to that of late 80's and early 90's when Punjabi films were all about Jatts, revenge and senseless action.

In a time when Punjabi Cinema is facing some criticism for churning out only comedies, Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De offers something altered; however, it will still be considered as an infancy step towards that change and not a total game changer. So, does Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De work? Yes and No! It does break the muddle of comedies but doesn't offer sufficient entertainment (read Drama/Conflict) to be taken as a serious contender for this change. Singh Vs Kaur earlier this year proved that Punjabi audience was yet again ready for action oriented films and if Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De succeeds at the box office, we may expect more action films in Punjabi Cinema.

Synopsis: Sanwal Gill (Sippy) and Waris Brar (Aman) are group leaders at a college, who have a love hate relationship inherited from their fathers. They aim to get along for the sake of the other students but that resolve is severely tested when a beautiful girl named Seerat (Isha) walks into their lives. Sanwal is immediately smitten and pursues Seerat. Meanwhile, she only has eyes for Waris and resolves to win his heart. Rival college leader Jolly wreaks revenge on Sanwal and Waris by inflaming tensions between them.

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues: The problem with Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De is that neither it is an action film, nor a comedy or a romantic movie; it combines all of these in a somewhat poor screenplay. Character actor turned writer Prince K J Singh needs to go back to the screenplay fundamentals before he churns out another film as a writer. He has great potential which can be seen is his dialogues. However, he has completely messed-up the establishment of his characters and conflict. Usually successful Bollywood or Indian films have seen five-six acts (3/3) compared to standard Hollywood's 3 act rule and this is where the screenplay falters, instead of having these highlights, the film doesn't offer a good introduction and climax leaving just the Pre-Interval scenes as somewhat stronger. Excessive use of songs is another downer for the film. The length of the film is mere 130 minutes and more conflict could have been added. Characters could have developed a lot more than what we see in the film. For instance, characters played by Rahul Dev and Sukhdev Sukha are so badly written and make them appear as mere roles and not characters. Similarly, the conflict between the senior group (Om Puri, Gugu Gill, Mohd Saddique, Sardar Sohi) is just too confusing and could have been way better explained. Dialogues are really good and make you look upon them. Overall, the screenplay lacks flow. A mediocre job!

Acting: Sippy Gill's subtle yet macho portrayal of his character is sure to win him fans as well as haters. He looks bloody scary in his angry look expressions but also succeeds in connecting through his emotional scenes. Isha Rikhi is beautiful and does a good job; a few more films will decide her fate. Watching Om Puri and Guggu Gill is such a treat for Punjabi film lovers and both of them don't disappoint in whatever is given to them. Dhaliwal delivers a terrific performance; I don't understand why he is not having solo releases, he’s such a fine good looking actor. Rahul Dev in a special appearance is competent and also looks dashing. Jaswinder Bhalla is repetitive yet lovable. Razia Sukhbir is good. Sardar Sohi, Daljit Kaur and Mandeep Kaur are wasted. Karamjit Anmol is in terrific form. Mohammad Saddiq is okay, Sukhdev Sukha is plastic but his presence in the Song College is commendable. Harinder Bhullar looks different without a turban, makes you giggle in whatever he's got. Prince K J Singh as the main antagonist is good but suffers from his own mediocre writing; nevertheless, he’s got a good amount of screen presence. Overall, Good performances!

Music: Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De has multiple composers Dr. Zeus, TRU-Skool, Laddi Gill, Justin Thind and Jawar Dildar who deliver a very good album. Some standout tracks are Bin College De, Title Track – Putt Jattan De, Kudam Kabila, Yarra Ve and Kabutri. Item song Preeti was not needed and it is the only dull track from the album. Overall, very good music!

Direction and Technical Aspects: First time director Simranjit Singh Hundal does a good job. There is definitely a lot of room for improvement but attempting a non-comedy in today's time deserves him and his producer a pat! Action by K. Ganesh Kumar is never seen before for a Punjabi film but a lot of it may appear fake and too overboard. Editing by Bunty Nagi is average; however, not much blame can be given to the editor when the screenplay itself is confusing. The director takes a few cinematic liberties and there are also a few continuity errors, most noticeable one being the anti-climax where Sippy Gill is hurt badly and still turns out without those injuries in the very next scene. Cinematography by Akashdeep Pandey is apt. Overall, Good!

Jatt Boys Putt Jattan De is a brave attempt that breaks the clutter of comedies in Punjabi Cinema but it lacks a solid foundation in form of a good screenplay. Watch it for its ensemble cast, terrific performances (mostly), excellent music, stylish dialogues and over the top action (if you are fan of it).

        Movie Review - Young Malang

        Review by +Bikram Bathh
        Cine Punjab Reviews
        Sept 20, 2013

Young Malang was launched sometime in April this year with much fanfare. Initially, I was waiting for the film because of its starcast and a powerful business house backing it but from the last few days, my interest in the film couldn't build up, hence I went to the theatre expecting a very average film. Now, the question is, does the film fulfill the expectations, and frankly it depends. If you enter the theatre like I did, you'll be surprised by a lot of things in the film including the acting and technical finesse but if you expect to watch anything better than that you may be disappointed. The lackluster story almost killed the film.

Synopsis: Despite being from very different backgrounds, 6 friends (3 boys and 3 girls) create a friendship. Jaskaran Brar (Balli Riar} is wealthy and short-tempered person who has earned his nickname of Garari Bai. Kashmeer Singh (Vinaypal Buttar) is a Desi Jatt from Bathinda tries to be man of action like his father, earning himself the nickname Ghaint Jatt.

Synopsis included in the media kit is a bit misleading when you watch the film.

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues: Young Malang had three writers - Manshendra, Rajdeep Singh and Ravi but still they couldn't figure out what they wanted to show. The story of the film has no weight and looks like a collage picked up from various sources. Infact, the film doesn't take any forward step until the interval and has just a few scenes where people have been used in scenes as objects rather than characters. Post interval, the film takes a turn but that soon goes into a fast forward route making it an overall below average fare. As written above, the screenplay is borrowed from a bunch of Bollywood films (read 3 Idiots, Dil Chahta Hai, DDKJ) and Punjabi films (read Mel Karade Rabba, Yaar Annmulle). Dialogues are decent though and some of them make you LOL, however, I wish the story had more substance. Average

Acting: Yuvraj Hans is on an upward trend after good performances in Yaar Annmulle, Burrraahh and a recent cameo in Viyah 70 Km. It takes guts to make fun of you and Yuvraj Hans deserves kudos for that. His portrayal of a NRI speaking tootti fotti Punjabi may not go too well with the youth but families will love him. He goes overboard at times but that is fine as long as the film is a comedy. He has potential and can be a future superstar of Punjabi Cinema if he chooses his films wisely. Vinaypal Buttar has made a smashing debut and has immense potential as a comic actor. Because of his age and declining hairline, he may not look too convincing as a lead actor (thanks to the stereotypes in Indian Cinema) but he can definitely survive banking on his excellent comic timing. Balli Riar has the right attitude but lacks the acting skills. He has made his acting debut with this film but doesn't look convincing in majority of the scenes. He should work more on his expressions if he has to make a career in acting. Bollywood actress Anjana Sukhani has done an excellent job and like Yuvraj Hans, she deserves a few extra points just because of the hardwork she has put in to dub her own Punjabi dialogues. She is the best import from Bollywood to Punjabi Cinema in the recent times. Neetu Singh is confident but needs to really lose some weight now (please!). Anita Kailey is ravishing but will need to prove her acting sensibilities in future films. Balwinder Bicky aka Chacha Raunki Ram is in top form. Yograj Singh is competent in whatever he has got but is mostly wasted, same with Harpal Singh and Kiran Kumar, who are seen in just 2-3 scenes. Tej Sapru was okay. Ronnie was decent. Overall, Good

Music: Young Malang has decent music but no chartbuster material. In a time when one Punjabi film is releasing every week, it needs to stand out from the clutter and music plays a huge role. If this film does well, music will have a better shelf life otherwise it will sink along with the film. My pick is the title song, Fakiyan, Hawa Vich Mehkan, Lakk Vich Current. Overall, Decent

Direction and Technical Aspects: Director Rajdeep Singh has been an assistant/associate director for several years and his experience can be seen in the film. Technically, the film will surprise you. It is on par with any Bollywood film. Producer Rahul Inder Singh Sidhu has left no stone unturned in giving the film a grand look and together as a team, producer and director have employed some of the best technicians for the film. Cinematography by ace cinematographer Anshul Choubey (Jatt and Juliet fame) is top notch. Art Direction, Choreography is apt. The only downer here is the background score which is pathetic and out of date. There are a few editing and continuity errors that can be neglected. Overall, Very Good!

Watch Young Malang for the Bollywood like production values, excellent technicalities and performances by its lead actors Yuvraj Hans, Vinaypal Buttar and Anjana Sukhani. I wish the film also carried a story to make it a wholesome entertainer. Also watch it if you have nothing else to do this weekend and you like to support Punjabi Cinema!

Bollywood's one of the most successful director/producer Subhash Ghai is all set to don the role of a producer for upcoming Punjabi film Double Di Trouble.

Double Di Trouble also brings back Bollywood legend Dharmendra back to his roots who will be seen in a Punjabi Cinema after 2 decades. Interestingly, Gippy Grewal will be playing the role of his son in this double dhamaal comedy. Both Dharmendra and Gippy Grewal are playing double roles hence the title Double Di Trouble. Double Di Trouble also stars Minnisha Lamba, Poonam Dhillon, Ragini Khanna, Gurpreet Ghuggi and others. It will be directed by Smeep Kang of Lucky Di Unlucky Story and Carry On Jatta fame. The shooting of the film has already started in and around Chandigarh.

The story is about a father-son pair visited by their doppelganger and the confusion created by them. The film is expected to hit the theatres in May next year.
