Director Navaniat Singh is a name that has made it big in the Punjabi film industry. Be it his romantic drama Tera Mera Ki Rishta, romantic action drama Mel Karade Rabba, political thriller Dharti, sports drama Taur Mittran Di or his recent masala entertainer Singh Vs Kaur, he has proved to be one of the most versatile directors around. Now, when he teams up with the biggest producers of Punjabi Cinema (Gunbir Sidhu and Manmord Sidhu) to make the first Con-Comedy (of our cinema), stakes are obviously going to be high. Add to that names like action director Allan Amin (Dhoom Series fame), Prince of Bhangra Jazzy B and the latest singing sensation Garry Sandhu, expectations become huge.

The important question is.. does the film deliver what it promised?
And the simple answer is a yes. It falters at places but believe me if I say "Punjabi Cinema has grown by leaps and bounds", this film serves as a perfect reference check to my statement. There was a time when we only had religious films (60's-70's) which moved on to revenge action films (80's-90's), than switched to drama films (00's) and recently a lot of comedies (10's) but Romeo Ranjha takes that much needed giant leap and shows us that internationalized action has arrived in Punjabi Cinema.

Synopsis: Romeo (Jazzy B) and Ranjha (Garry Sandhu) are both from Punjab who went to Thailand to fulfill their dreams. One day accidentally they meet each other and get very excited to know that they are both from Punjab and become good friends. While working hard, having fun they managed to make loads of money! In the mean time, Ranjha falls in love with a girl named Preet who runs a refugee camp with the help of her uncle. Preet introduces Ranjha to him and he placed the condition that he can marry Preet only if he can 'place a huge charity for the refugees'. Ranjha wants to marry Preet so he took money that him and Romeo had earned together! Romeo found out about the missing money and went to find him and when he did, asked about the money and when Ranjha tells him what had happened, he told him he too got cheated by Preet and her uncle! They both start searching for them and come to know that Preet and her Uncle are in Punjab and the mystery continues.

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues: Romeo Ranjha's story and screenplay are written by Dheeraj Rattan and frankly this is the lowest point of the film. The story (although lifted from several sources) is fine but the screenplay goes haywire in the middle of the film, making it unbearable for a few people, however, if you can sustain that part, the film ends with a bang. Both the romantic angles are totally out of sync with the film and could have been easily avoided. Tracks of Rancho and Mancho are unanswered, too many cinematic liberties also spoil the screenplay. Dialogues by Amberdeep Singh are okay and fit the film well. However, a better screenplay would have made Romeo Ranjha much larger in scope. Average

Acting: Jazzy B is back with his second film after last year's Best Of Luck and here he gets a role that fits his persona very well. He has worked really hard on his acting and one can see that during several key scenes of the film (especially the comic ones). He does look aged at times but it can be taken care in the future with better make-up. Garry Sandhu makes his debut with Romeo Ranjha and he has done a fine job. Although it will be better if we wait for a few more films before deciding on their fate in the film industry. However, one thing that I'll like to definitely add here.. is the chemistry between these two actors, it is first-rate and it would be very interesting to see if they would be seen together in a film again (probably a sequel to this one?). Monica Bedi is decent, better than her last film Sirphire. Parul Gulati is below average so is the new actress Aman Grewal. Yograj Singh and Rana Jung Bahadur are as always competent. Rana Ranbir is good. Overall, Good!

Music: Music of the film is fine and tracks like Jugnu, Chandri Raat and ofcourse the title track are bound to be loved by the audience. However, it could have been way better especially when you have singers like Jazzy B and Garry Sandhu. Background music is good. Overall, Good!

Direction and Technical Aspects:Navaniat Singh has always been praised for his versatility but having said that, the major criticism for his work has been in the form of some minor loopholes here and there leaving his direction skills from being far from perfect. It is high time that he gets some great people in his direction team who can point out these minor flaws at the time of shoot and not embarrass him once the film is on the editing table. Cinematographer Harmeet Singh (Navaniat's dad) has done a fantastic job especially with all the aerial shots. However, the real scene stealer here is action director Allan Amin who has worked on getting some amazing stunts, chases and thrill sequences lifting the value of the film to a never seen before level in Punjabi Cinema. Lastly, kudos to the producers for spending so lavishly and showing the way forward to the film industry. Overall, Good!

Romeo Ranjha is a con-comedy with action elements that form some really unseen sequences for a Punjabi film. The film is a path breaker in terms of action and production values, however a better screenplay would have made it a complete blockbuster material. If you want to watch a Punjabi commercial film that will be remembered for its brave attempt and excellent chemistry between its lead stars Jazzy B and Garry Sandhu, don't miss Romeo Ranjha.

Rating - ★★½  (Extra ★ for a brave attempt)

Anurag Singh and Diljit Dosanjh as a team have become a brand in Punjabi Cinema. They have together appeared in the two most loved films of Punjabi Cinema, the Jatt and Juliet series (Part 1 and 2) but failed to recreate the magic in Disco Singh to a certain extend. But when a theme like "1984" reunites them with their Jatt and Juliet series producers, magic was supposed to be there.

Synopsis: 1984 Punjab is a story of a mother and her missing son set in the backdrop of 1984 Punjab, when the state was going through a terrible time of terrorism. The film depicts the longing of a mother for her son and her search for her son, who is labelled a terrorist because of the bad times in Punjab and how he eventually fights for his rights and parallels longs to return home because of his love for his mother.

Many stories have come and gone in regards to the sensitive period of 1984 which Punjab has seen. But none of them in the past had touched my heart like this one has. Maybe this one is a bit special. Because this tells the tale of a Mother and the love she has for her son, like every mother all over the world. Based on some real incidents, this is Anurag Singh’s latest offering. Director Anurag Singh, after making the audience go crazy on their seats with his previous films is back once again. But this time, he means serious business. He is at his lethal best in this one.

The Story and Screenplay of the film has been written by Anurag Singh himself and I have written it previously that nobody but only he writes the best screenplays in Punjab. Coming to the story, firstly, it is an emotional bonding of a Mother and her son. And believe me, the scenes which I saw do happen at our places in our homes as well. The story shows love of a mother for her lost son and how she goes about finding him and is set in the backdrop of the period of 1984-1986.

Screenplay of the film is fast and to the point but still it has a length of around 160 minutes. That is because it has a story to tell and stories even today can’t be told in 2 hours. They need a time span of their own. Coming to the dialogues, they have been jointly penned by Surmeet Maavi and Anurag Singh. Both have done a great job with the dialogues and seem to possess a great knowledge of the language and Punjabi spoken in that period.

Now coming to Anurag Singh, the director. What can you say about this man. He’s given Punjabi Cinema its biggest hits till date and now gives a film which will surely be remembered even 100 years from now when the history of Punjabi Cinema is written. Anyways Anurag Singh seems to have done a lot of work behind this film. Be it the locations or the properties used. All of them play a character in the film. That Murphy Radio used in the film takes the story forward time and again. The choice of Kuldeep Manak Saab’s songs in the film was excellent. Special mentions for all the technical and creative departments like Costumes, Art, Cinematography, etc…

Music has been given by some Musical Maestros of Punjab. The album has big names like Gurmeet Singh, Jatinder Shah, Nick Dhammu and Gurmoh as composers. Sukhwinder, Diljit and Harshdeep as singers. Rangrut is the big commercial track in the film whereas Awwal Allah and Meri Maa nu Suneha deyo tell you how diverse the album is. Also it has a peppy commercial number like Channo.

Now coming to the performances. Usually such films are heavily dependent on various things like Story, Direction, etc but what matters is performances. And believe me they are mind boggling and near to perfect. Kirron Kher delivers yet another landmark performance after Khamosh Pani in Punjabi films. Coming to Diljit Dosanjh this film just shows his versatility as an actor. If he can make you laugh then beware he can also make you emotional. The monologue scene where he cries in the fields depicts this.

Pawan Raj Malhotra – Yes, that’s the baddie in the film. And yes he does make you believe that he’s the bad guy and makes you hate him like anything. And if he’s successful at that, then he’s done well. Sonam Bajwa – Is she the lead actress? Yes, she is and she does have around 8 scenes and does a good job with them. Rana Ranbir is yet another fine actor in this list of genius actors. He’s done yet another good job and it seems like Anurag knows to extract the best out of him.

Rest of the cast has names like Manav Vij, Arun Bali, Vansh Bhardwaj and many others. They all succeed in their roles. Vishwas Mini and Gursharan Singh as Titri make confident debuts.

Overall, Punjab 1984 is a historic film and will surely be remembered in the history of Punjabi Cinema. It has some fine performances and above all a Director who is at his lethal best and is the unsung hero of the film. This film is surely a MUST WATCH!

The film starring Satinder Sartaaj and others is called "The Black Prince" and is produced by Brillstein Entertainment Partners. The film is described as the tragic yet fascinating story about the last king of the state of Punjab Maharaja Duleep Singh.

The bilingual English-Hindi film is budgeted at about $5 million (28 Crores) and is out to potential producing partners in India. Set in India and the U.K., The Black Prince is eyeing a late September start date.

Synopsis
Eh Janam Tumhare Lekhe ~ This life is dedicated to "YOU THE ALMIGHTY" (God). This film is a journey of one man "BHAGAT PURAN SINGH" who treaded a difficult and exhausting path. The journey was made possible by his infinite faith in his mission: the moral values he received from his mother: and courage, vision and determination he received from Guru Granth Sahib. With compassion in his heart he found energy that can move mountains and create miracles. The film is an important chapter in the history of post - partition Punjab. A varied approach to meaningful events would carry great appeal and emotionally connect with the audience. The rich music score soaked in traditional punjabi sounds, Shabads, songs and the culturally rich rhythms emanate fresh waves of sound that the listeners will savour with delight. The tireless research done for the film makes it a very authentic and genuine attempt to recreate the life and the times of a penniless man who calls himself " a humble sweeper at the footsteps of Gods abode". He ferried an invalid for many years on his shoulders and over a span of time the burden of every helpless human became a garland around his neck. In his arduous journey he was joined by millions of altruistic human beings who supported his noble cause without knowing the sheer magnitude of the herculean task of the man who undertook it. The film is sure to draw the crowds for its honesty, sincerity, brilliant performances, music and a story everyone will relate with. It is an awe-inspiring journey of a human being who commits a lifetime to serving humanity and preserving the environment.
